TONNARA DI

SCOPELLO

The real constant in the history of this magical place out of time is tuna fishing, a very ancient, almost primitive practice, perhaps even used by the Phoenicians. Sicily has always witnessed the fertile passage of tuna during their migratory cycle in the Mediterranean Sea. Today we are left with numerous splendid Tonnara all along the coast, reminding us of the ancient and glorious practice of Sicilian fishermen.

OUR LITTLE HOME IN SICILY

WhatsApp Image 2024-06-06 at 12.28.09_3c2ecbbe.jpg

Our wedding is one of the most important projects of our lives. But there is another on the horizon:

our future little home in Sicily.

In 2023 we decided to buy an olive grove where to build a small house where to enjoy our time in Sicily with family and friends.

The first steps will be the construction of a well to access a secure water source, the planting of additional native trees, and the building of a fence.

If you would like to contribute to the realization of this new project, please contact us for our bank details or we will provide a box the day of the wedding.

TO DO AND SEE

Western Sicily is a little less visited than the east, but it’s definitely worth exploring. Historic villages, gorgeous beaches, inviting accommodation, and views for days.

La Tonnara di Scopello

You will be already spending 2 days in this beautiful place.

riserva-nautrale-dello-zingaro.jpeg

La riserva dello Zingaro

The Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro was the first natural reserve set up in Sicily in May 1981. The 7km one-way mainly flat hike boasts two beautiful bigger beaches and some other smaller, more secluded ones, so don’t forget to bring your bathing suit! One of the bigger beaches, at the end of the 7km hike, Cala dell’Uzzo, is really stunning and stopping here allows you to cool down a bit after walking for a while.

San Vito Lo Capo

Beyond having one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, San Vito Lo Capo is a well-known rock climbing destination. Along the coast on the west side of San Vito lo Capo is a coastal cliff nearly 4 kilometres long featuring as many as 1600 bolted climbing routes.

erice.jpeg

Erice

The ancient Greek name of Erice was Eryx, and its foundation was indeed associated with the Greek hero Eryx. It was not a Greek colony, as the Phoenicians founded it, but was largely Hellenized. It was destroyed in the First Punic War by the Carthaginians, and conquered by the Aghlabids in 831. It was ruled by the Arabs until the Norman conquest.

Ah! Don't forget to eat the ''Genovesi' at Maria Grammatico shop.

03-mura-di-tramontana-trapani.jpg

Trapani

It is the city from where Michele is from (even if he likes to say that he was born in Palermo). Get lost in the small street of the city center full of Baroque and Art Nouveau palazzi and churches as well as several fisherman houses.

Ah! do not forget to taste a 'Granita' at Colicchia shop as well as to have a drink on Mura di Tramontana. If you want to taste the best 'Arancina' in town go to the popular Rosticceria Al Pollero da Roberto.

Isola_di_Favignana.jpg

Favignana

It is the biggest of the Egadi islands. You can take a hydrofoil from the port of Trapani and in 40 min you will be in one of the most famous tuna fishing spot in the Mediterranean Sea. When you arrive rent a bike and explore the fantastic rocky beaches of the island but before leaving do not forget to visit the old Tonnara, already belonging to the Florio family. It is a masterpiece and you will better understand the culture of the Egadi islands.

Marettimo

It is the unspoilt paradise of the Egadi archipelago. Small white and blue houses against a rocky mountain backdrop greet you as you disembark the speedboat. Marettimo is accessible by hydrofoil from Trapani (1h 10min) or Favignana (30 min) but if you wan to visit this jewel we suggest you to book one or two nights there as well as to rent a boat with 'Pippo' as he will teach all the secrets of this unspoilt paradise.

500px-Levanzo-porto.jpg

Levanzo

It is the smallest of the Egadi islands and it is famous for the "Grotta del Genovese" with Neolithic cave paintings and Palaeolithic graffiti. Furthermore, in the water of Cala Minnola, on the eastern side of the island of Levanzo, lies one of the most important Sicilian underwater archaeological sites: a Roman cargo ship, loaded with wine amphoras, at 27 meters deep.

Segesta

Segesta was one of the major cities of the Elymians, one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily. On a hill just outside the site of the ancient city of Segesta lies an unusually well-preserved Doric temple. Some think it to have been built in the 420s BC by an Athenian architect, despite the city not having any Greek population. The prevailing view is that it was built by the indigenous Elymians

Saline di Trapani e Paceco

The Saline di Trapani e Paceco represent a piece of nature saved from urban expansion 26 years ago thanks to the establishment of the Reserve; in addition to being among the last productive salt pans remaining in Sicily, they are also a treasure trove of biodiversity, where productive activities and nature conservation coexist. The nature reserve is the habitat of many endemic plant species and it is an important stopover for many European migratory birds before they fly across the Strait of Sicily to Africa. If you are lucky you can also spot the beautiful flamingos. For an aperitivo at the sun set go to Mamma Caura.

Vucciria-Guttuso.jpg

Palermo

We decided to represent Palermo with the famous 'Vucciria' paint of Renato Guttuso as Palermo is not just a mix of beautiful palazzi and churches from the Arab-Norman time  but it is a well an explostion of feeling, flavours, smells, cultures that can be appreciated just if get lost in one of the four main markets of Palermo: Il Capo, la Vucciria, Ballarò e Borgo Vecchio. The list of places to visit in Palermo would be too long but definitelly do not miss to eat the famous 'Panino con la milza' (Sandwich with cow spleen)!
